Almost 20 million There are 72.4 million children in the US, meaning approximately 27% are living with a single parent.
The United States. About 23% of children live in a single parent home with no other adults. Globally, this amount is 7%. Thats about 1 in 4 children. A classroom of 26 students may have 6 students in this situation. Maybe even more since the research does not appear to include children who live with their single parent and another adult such as a grandparent.
Single mothers have experienced "a decrease in their income over the past several years and nearly half of them (47.5%) are living in poverty" (Solum, 2022). The poverty line differs in each state, and in Austin, Texas (one of the cities we have activity in), single mothers median income is a shocking $27,256. Tampa, a city in Central Florida (another area we have activity in) also is among the top 10 worst major cities for single mothers with a median income of $25,703. According to the St. Louis Federal Reserve (another area we have activity in), "A third [of single mothers] would not have been able to handle a $400 emergency expense in 2019" (Hernández Kent, 2022).
